brakes

When reviewing the brake components on a bike, there are four important variations to keep in mind:

Rim Brakes are a more traditional brake method in which the brake pads tighten around the rim of the wheels.

Disc Brakes are similar to the brakes in a car. The brake pads clamp down on a disc that has been mounted to the center of the wheel.

Mechanical Brakes, which are also more traditional, are directly attached to the brake lever via cables.

Hydraulic Brakes can provide more pressure to the rim or disc without as great of force applied to the brake lever.

Higher-end mountain bikes are generally equipped with hydraulic disc brakes because of their consistency and weight. However, they are also more expensive to both purchase and fix.
