how to choose a mountain bike
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, the main factors that go into finding the right mountain bike are the same: category, weight, and size. There are thousands of mountain bikes to choose from, so to help narrow down your options, consider the following features:
- Category: Cross-country bikes are built with endurance racing in mind, whereas downhill and freeride bikes are meant to take a beating. Refer to the categories in the next section for further explanation of each category.

- Weight: Though weight is not as big of a concern for beginner riders, know that a lighter bike will always make cross-country riding easier. Still, the lighter the bike, the more you’ll be paying. Carbon frames are the lightest material, used for cross-country, but they are often the most fragile. Steel, aluminum, and titanium are better choices for durability. The kind of riding you're doing, along with your price range, will dictate what frame material you should buy.

- Size: Finding the right size mountain bike means a more efficient and comfortable ride. Refer to the sizing chart to get an idea of the bike size that would work best for you. But to ensure you get the right size bike, schedule an appointment with your local bike shop to get fitted before you buy one.
